Job Types & Specialties

Remote nursing is not one job. It is dozens of different roles, and the day-to-day work varies a lot between them. This category holds a plain-English guide to each job type and specialty, so you can compare roles before you apply anywhere. Inside you will find utilization review and utilization management, case management, telephone and video triage, clinical documentation integrity (CDI), nursing informatics, telehealth, nurse auditing and HEDIS, appeals and grievances, prior authorization, legal nurse consulting, nurse education, nurse navigation, and specialty areas such as oncology, pediatrics, hospice and behavioral health. Each guide covers the same ground: what you actually do all day, the license and experience employers ask for, certifications that help (such as CCM, CDIP or CPHQ, where relevant), the software you are expected to know, typical pay ranges with the source named, the pros and cons, and a step-by-step plan for getting hired. Where a role is a poor fit for most bedside nurses, the guide says so openly. Start with the two or three roles closest to your clinical background. Experience in the same specialty is the single strongest factor in remote hiring.
